Soda blasting

— 26 September 2019

We have recently started to use soda blasting in our workshop to safely strip timber back to it's original state. This process is gentle to the underlying surface, allowing us to remove the coating without harming the substrate, and restore antique pieces of furniture to their former glory.

 What is soda blasting?

Soda blasting is a revolutionary cleaning technology that is safe, quick and cost-effective.

When combined, specially formulated granules of natural bicarbonate of soda and blasts of controlled compressed air react on contact with a contaminated surface area. The mild abrasive action allows it to safely strip almost any surface.

While similar to traditional sandblasting, it has the significant advantage of cleaning the surface without causing any harm to the environment. Soda blast is FDA approved, non-toxic and contains no free silica. It is non-sparking, non-flammable, non-hazardous and environmentally safe.

How is it used?

A soda blaster is a self-contained system that includes a blast generator, high pressure compressed air, moisture decontamination system and blast hose and nozzle.

When do we use it?

At BPR Contract Furniture, we use this process to safely strip timber back to its original state.

This process is much kinder and gentler to the underlying surface, removing the coating without harming the substrate. This allows us to efficiently remove stains, lacquers, and paintwork without losing the underlying character of antique furniture.
